Darla was a breath of fresh air. I loved when she said “I don’t much care about being dignified, but I’d like to become a better Christian.” When I read those words I knew I was in for a wonderful journey. I could not put this book down because I was compelled to see how things would turn out between Ethan and Darla. I needed to know if Darla would trust God enough to stay the course and not give into fear. Sometimes our past can be ugly and shameful, but when God forgives He throws our sins to the Sea of Forgetfulness. I'm glad Darla eventually came to that realization. If I had one compliant it would be that I want a wedding scene between Ethan and Darla.

The Saloon Girl Journey Texas Women of Spirit Book 3 edition by Angela Castillo Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
This is the third book in the series. The others are The River Girl's Song and The Comanche Girl's Prayer. There's another story after this one called The River Girl's Christmas.
Darla is trying to rebuild her life. She's at a home for "unfortunates" and trying to follow the rules. Ethan is the owner's son, and he is drawn to Darla from the beginning. Darla feels the same, but she believes Ethan could never love her if he found out about her past. To keep her secret, she runs away when a man threatens to expose her.
This book was okay. It reminded me of the way I felt about the first book, like it was more of a "journey" than a full romance. Darla is learning to not make assumptions about people and that she's worthy to be accepted for who she is - and not just by Ethan. I found it odd that Darla was so suspicious of everyone that was kind to her, especially after she joined the medicine show. She was the one who went running to them, after all.
Compared to the others, I'd have to say that so far, I've enjoyed The Comanche Girl's Prayer the best. This one has me on the fence. For a romance, there wasn't much interaction between the characters to get me invested in their relationship. As a journey, it's a pretty good tale, but it wasn't one of my favorites. This is another one of those "diet" books, coming in under 200 pages.
This promise from God is the premise for “The Saloon Girl’s Journey”. Angela Castillo is a lifelong resident of Texas and is well known for writing its historical fiction. This novella is no exception. Set in the late 19th century, Castillo explores the plight of Saloon girls who have found salvation, traveling medicine shows and donor supported homes for “unfortunates”. The life of a woman was tough in the late 1800’s but being compounded by poverty, racial disparities or questionable occupations would make survival a challenge.
“The Saloon Girl’s Journey” is full of wonderful characters each with their own unique back story. While they are dark and tortured, these women are hopeful and resilient and provide moments of humor to this story. They are survivors and are looking to share their joy and victory with those around them. Fabulous! Learning to trust and hear the voice of God in the midst of daily trials is woven thru the pages and self speak. Darla, the main character is intent on getting things right.
This story has a few scenes involving violence but none of it is descriptive or gratuitous. There is no foul language or sexual content, altho’ there is discussion about prostitution, it’s in very general terms and not provocative in any way. Romance is a definite factor and it is handled in a way that leaves you wanting to know what happened to the 2 characters. It’s a great feeling♥️
4.5 stars for a lovely journey. I loved the characters in this story, and the details kept it firmly rooted in the historical period. The plot has several unexpected twists and turns, which kept this reader guessing until almost the last page. There were a couple of places where the plot seemed "forced" but they weren't distracting enough to harm the overall story. Recommended for anyone who likes inspirational romance and Texas history. It's not necessary to read the first two books of this series before this third installment, but you'll want to read them so you can meet many more wonderful characters!
I obtained the first book in this series through Bookbub and am so thankful to be a member as I might never have run across this series/author ( is so big and offers so much!) had I not seen the Bookbub recommendation. This whole series was wonderfully written and each book makes you want to read more of the characters' stories. If you have not read the previous two books, you just have to go back and read them as well. If you are reading reviews to decide whether or not to purchase this book, my greatest piece of advice to you would be to purchase all three and read them in order. I say that not because the series requires this but because I feel you will enjoy the series as a whole if you do this.
I am in awe at the wonderful story of each of the main character of this series. The author has developed her characters so well that you feel like they would be your very best friends if you lived in the location and time period of these stories. I am an avid reader and could not put these books down. I was in tears through many parts of these stories because the writing definitely was of such quality that I felt I was there. (Isn't that the sign df a well written novel after all?). Some of my tears were for the sad things that took place but many were tears of joy for God's love in the lives of these characters!
I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys a good tale of how love and the joy of the Lord can help overcome hardships in our lives. (These books were not written in a preachy manner either.) I believe the author did her research for the time period and the circumstances and mind thoughts in the stories were a proper reflection of what took place in those type settings long ago. I really appreciate the authenticity presented in these books.
Read and and enjoy!
To the author I know you have another book in the series coming out in August 2016. I am anxiously awaiting its arrival at . I also hope to encourage you to consider writing a few more books in this series. God bless you for your wonderful effort!
